District Governor Sue Grub made her official visit to the Fairmont Lions Club on November 13. In addition to speaking to the club, she was asked to induct our new Lions. Lions present sponsored by Nancy Sickles were her daughter Mary Sue Deavers and Beulah Miller. Lions sponsored by Jacob Brumage included his wife Margaret, David Cain, Dennis Basnett and Kelby Church. Kathryn Miller was unable to attend.
In her comments to the club, DG Grub discussed her goals and said that the club was helping her with her membership goal by inducting the six new members. With these new members, the club membership stands at 31.
Following the remarks by the district governor, club president Jacob Brumage presented her with a card and gift from the club. DG Grub was accompanied by her husband Lion Carl. She is a member of the Valley Grove Lions Club.
Annual Lions Christmas Party for Children Friday Dec. 19th      Again this year, the Fairmont Lions Club is sponsoring the Christmas Party for the children at the Fairmont Union Mission. The event will begin with dinner prepared by the Union Mission at 6:00 followed by the children receiving their gifts. The club provided $1,000 toward the purchase of gifts and Lions are helping to wrap the gifts. Some Lions also donated Christmas wrapping paper.
This is the 68th consecutive year that the Fairmont Lions Club has seen that Fairmont's underprivileged children do not go without Christmas gifts. In recent years, other groups and individuals have also assisted in providing the gifts. The very first Lions Christmas party was held in 1935, but it became an annual project a few years later.
Nancy Sickles has coordinated with the Union Mission in planning for this year's event.
Fairmont State Basketball Coach Tim Murphy addressed the December 3rd meeting of the Fairmont Civic Clubs at the Holiday Inn. The luncheon meeting was hosted by the Fairmont Kiwanis Club. Fairmont Lions attending were President Jacob Brumage, Elizabeth Swiger, Jim Coleman and Bob Moffett. One thing that Murphy mentioned in his remarks was that the team now plays some Saturday afternoon games, which would be a good opportunity for people to attend. He emphasized the importance of players going to class on time and getting their education in addition to playing basketball.
