Fairmont Lions Brought Joy to Many During Holiday Season
From ringing bells for the Salvation Army's Kettle Drive to Eye Screening during the Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival to Fairmont's Christmas Parade and the Party for the Children at the Union Mission, Fairmont Lions took part in the activities that brought happiness to many area residents during the holiday season.
According to Chairperson Aletta Moffett, nine Lions rang the bells for the Salvation Army on December 3rd. Ringing were Elizabeth Swiger and Jim Coleman, Nancy and Chris Morgan, Keith Long, Nancy Sickles and Virginia Gallion, Jackie and Ed Neese.
According to the Union Mission's newsletter "Messenger," the Fairmont Lions Club's 71st consecutive Christmas party provided 105 children a "wonderful Christmas." "We do not believe any other organization in this community has been doing Christmas for kids this long. Thank you Lions for thinking of our children." Prior to the party, the club auctioned the poinsettia donated by member Bill Kime and picked up by Jim Coleman. The $30 proceeds were donated to the Union Mission. Nancy Sickles served as the Chairperson for the party. Gifts were wrapped by Margaret and Jake Brumage, Aletta and Bob Moffett and Martha Warren, with assistance by students helping at the Union Mission. Those buying gifts for the club and distributing gifts included Nancy and Chris Morgan, Ralph Davis, Geneva Shinaberry, Nancy Sickles, Virginia Gallion, Wayne Dodd, Keith, Lisa and Thomas Long, Carol Baker, Aletta and Bob Moffett.
In what many have called "Fairmont's best Christmas parade ever," the Lions-sponsored parade saw bands, marching units, floats and more pass by eager children with their families for nearly an hour. The club presented prizes of $100, $75 and $50 for first, second and third places, respectively, to floats judged by club members to best interpret Christmas. These prizes were donated by club members. Elizabeth Swiger, Nancy Sickles and Jackie Neese served as judges. Lenny the Lion (Kathy Dalrymple) from the Friendly Lions Club was well-received by the many children along the parade route. Other "Friendly" Lions who participated in the parade were Charlotte and Dan Heintzman, as well as Kathy Dalrymple's son Ryan and daughter Kara. Parade Co-chairpersons were Carol Baker and Marci Carroll. Lions District Governor Patty Nutter was the Parade Marshall. Paul Nutter came with DG Patty. Bob Brummage arranged for the paint and Ed Neese, Carol Baker, Aletta and Bob Moffett marked off the parade line-up. Others helping or participating in the parade were Keith Long, Barbara Kyer, Ed Neese, Bob Brummage, Ralph Davis, Virginia Gallion, Marci Carroll, John Marsicano, Aletta and Bob Moffett, Dennis Basnett, Jake Brumage, and Jim Coleman.
Several club members assisted with the Eye Screening held as part of the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Aletta and Bob Moffett brought the Lions Mobile Eye Screening Unit to Fairmont and Dennis Basnett assisted with the return of the Unit. In addition to Aletta and Bob Moffett, Virginia Gallion, Nancy Sickles, John Marsicano, Keith Long, Carol Baker, Elizabeth and Jim Coleman assisted with the screening.

Three Rivers Festival Coloring Contest

Club Members Invited to Assist Humane Society
Nancy Morgan is planning to do some volunteering at the Humane Society's Animal Shelter and asks any members wishing to join her to contact her to set a date and time. Lions may also call the shelter (304-366-5391 )and supply an e-mail address to receive information on volunteering. There is a continuing need for food and the club is asking those who wish to donate pet food to bring it to the February 9th and/or April 12th meetings. In order to keep the animals "regular," the Humane Society requests Iams brand dog or puppy food and Meow Mix brand cat food or kitty food. They would also welcome "scoopable" litter.
Eyeglass Requests Approved
At the December business meeting, the Fairmont Lions Club approved seven applications for eye exams and glasses. Four applications were approved at the January 12th meeting, with one request referred back to the committee for additional clarifying information.
